Common Issues When Downloading Ringtones

Downloading ringtones is very easy and convenient with the expanding numbers of tone providers. However, there are some issues faced by many when they perform any download from these servers.

Server Downtime:

A more common problem when downloading ringtone is the availability of the server. In most cases, some sites offering mobile phone ringers are facing issues with their servers. There are instances when services are not available for more than 24 hours duration due to hosting issues.

End User Browser Compatibility:

Some users fail to test tones prior to downloading them due to browser compatibility and missing plug-ins. Most sites offering mobile phone tone download require plug-in order for tones to be tested. Some of these sites are also requiring Java Scripts to be enabled in order to properly play the tones.

There are also mashups designed to aid users in choosing mp3 songs converted into ringer. These mashups contain information about the artist, song label, and other information associated with the songs converted in to mobile phone ringers. Ringtone Gal, DJ Booth, and Obani Urban Music are among the mashups offering these services. These mashups are some times unavailable to certain browsers due to system failure and browser compatibility.

Embedded Codes:

A very common problem when downloading ringtones are embedded codes with the ringer. There are sites that one should not trust when it comes to free download, they have several ringers whose files are corrupted and some are designed to contain scripts that can damage a user's computer. Known issues in relation to these embedded codes include the installation of advertising software to a host computer. Vulnerable systems are easily penetrated with these malicious scripts making it a threat to the user's privacy and security.

Compatibility:

A major problem encountered by many after downloading tones from several sites and even network providers is ringtone and mobile phone compatibility. Not all tones are compatible on most mobile phones. Each mobile phone has a recommended mobile phone melody type with appropriate file extension and encoding.

Two concerns arise when it comes to compatibility. First is the type of tone and the second it the format or file extension. Mobile phones are limited to the type of ringer it can store. Some are only capable of storing monophonic tones and other handsets are capable of storing combinations of ringers such as polyphonic and truetones or monophonic and polyphonic tones.

Limited Network Coverage:

Most web portals require ringtones to be downloaded to a user's mobile device by sending the file through short messaging systems (SMS) or multimedia messaging systems (MMS). However, only listed network providers or carriers are catered by most web sites. Mobile phones whose MMS services are not activated will not be able to receive files through MMS. This requires the activation of the service from the network provider.

As an alternative for users outside the US, they need to download the tone and store is on their computer. To upload it to the mobile, there must be an established connection either through Bluetooth or Infrared. Wired connections can also be used to upload files from the computer to the device.
